Spud by John Van de Ruit

Set in South Africa during the 1990's Spud (John Milton) is sent to an elite boarding school in the Natal area. Madness ensues with coming to age adventures that include Mad Dog, Rambo, Rain Man, Boggo, and Gecko. These characters are definitely out there but I found myself rooting for them and wanting them to succeed. If a crazy school life isnt enough Spud has to deal with a bizarre home life with a paranoid father, senile grandmother, and overzealous mother.
Beware since this is definitely a "boy book" with lots of crude humor, dry wit, and adolescent situations.  I found out more about boys than I wanted to but often laughed out loud at the embarassing situations the boys got caught up in.
Great book, definitely recommended for high school boys.
