Arwen sees ALL
Well, I had to laud on Lord of the Rings since it IS my favorite of all books and movies. Arwen is one of my favorite characters and when we saw this stand up at Junkman's daughter in Athens we had to get it. We considered Gollum but thought it too creepy for a library media center (imagine Gollum eyeing you while you're trying to study). J.R.R. Tolkien's poem, "All That Glitters is Not Gold", from the Fellowship of the Rings is supposed to be the suggested thought in Arwen's head and it goes as follows:
- All that is gold does not glitter,
- Not all those who wander are lost;
- The old that is strong does not wither,
- Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
- From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
- A light from the shadows shall spring;
- Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
- The crownless again shall be king.
GRAPHIC NOVELS
Found some awesome graphic novels hidden in the collection. Graphic novels have really taken off at GHS and these are historically based. We have, for example, D-Day, Pearl Harbor, Egyptian Mythology, Bible Manga, The Battle of Midway and several more exhilarating titles that will tantalize your senses.

The Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins (Hunger Game Series)
WoW - What a book! I've read the first two books which were amazing and in this book the story of Katniss Everdeen continues and many of my questions about the series were answered. Katniss has gone through the Hunger Games twice and now for the third time has to face it with other victors in the Quarter Quell set up by President Snow in an attempt to get rid of her and qualm the revolts that have been taking place in the districts. Won't give away the story but the Katniss, Peeta, Gale love triangle is finally absolved and I couldnt have asked for a better ending.

Spud by John Van de Ruit
Set in South Africa during the 1990's Spud (John Milton) is sent to an elite boarding school in the Natal area. Madness ensues with coming to age adventures that include Mad Dog, Rambo, Rain Man, Boggo, and Gecko. These characters are definitely out there but I found myself rooting for them and wanting them to succeed. If a crazy school life isnt enough Spud has to deal with a bizarre home life with a paranoid father, senile grandmother, and overzealous mother.
Beware since this is definitely a "boy book" with lots of crude humor, dry wit, and adolescent situations. I found out more about boys than I wanted to but often laughed out loud at the embarassing situations the boys got caught up in.
Great book, definitely recommended for high school boys.
